To complicate matters, HP does not provide a direct download link to the Server Recovery Disc. However, in the MediaSmartforum Archive there is a discussion about consumers purchasing 2nd hand HP MediaSmarts and where to get the original or copies of the Installation, PC Restore and Server Recovery Disc. Of course, HP does not provide a link whereas one of the very helpful forum members provided a link to a good drive with the software on it ( ) which is also infected with Heur.AdvML.C and Trojan.Gen.2 Of course, this is to be expected because the downloaded files are disk image files.
With the server directly connected to an expendable laptop, I could always just run the recovery disk and then (hopefully) clean up any infection after the fact. I'd ensure that both the laptop and the server are isolated from my network.

Full recovery with recovery media decrypts the failed disk and recovers the data. This takes more time than Full Disk Encryption Drive Slaving Utility and Dynamic Mount Utility that let you access data quickly.
Full Disk Encryption Drive Slaving Utility replaces older versions of Full Disk Encryption drive slaving functionality, and supports R73 and all E80.x versions. You can use the Full Disk Encryption Drive Slaving Utility instead of disk recovery.
Remote Help Users can be denied access to their Full Disk Encryption-protected computers or Media Encryption & Port Protection-protected devices for many different reasons. Remote Help can help users in these types of situations. The user contacts the Help Desk or specified administrator and follows the recovery procedure. is available only for hard disk authentication. It is not available for recovery file authentication.
After successful authentication, use Windows Explorer to access the disk drive. If you fail to access the locked disk drive, use the Full Disk Encryption recovery file, then run the Drive Slaving Utility again.
If you've tried all the troubleshooting in this FAQ and have come to the conclusionthat your Media Vault's motherboard is dead and you need to recover data from the drive(s),there is a Windows data recovery program for the MV1available from CNW Recovery. This program is free to download in 'demo' modeand if you are able to see your files, the odds are pretty good you can recover them. The demo version of the program won't allow youto write the files to another drive. For that you need a licensed copy.A 30-day licence costs $19.99 and a permanentlicense costs $34.99 for individual users. It would be best to have a SATA-to-USBadapter to use this program to make it easier to connect the drive you remove fromthe Media Vault directly to your PC. They are available on line from many sources for about $15.
1) Power down the Media Vault server. 2) If a second disk has been added, remove it from the drive bay. Note: if asecond drive is installed at the time of the firmware recovery, a JBOD (spannedvolume) will automatically be created on both drives. However, if you areusing the non-destructive recovery.img, if you have a second drivethen keep it in the drive bay.3) Locate the reset button on the front of the Media Vault. It is to the left ofthe USB port. Use a push-pin, paper clip or other tool to hold the button in.4) Press in the power button located on the back panel. Do not release eitherbutton for 5 seconds. The health LED should flash blue/purple which indicates the MVis in recovery mode.5) Run the HP Media Vault Firmware Recovery program (it will be installed in theHewlett-Packard Media Vault Recovery group in the start->all programs menu.) Just follow the steps given bythe utility. 6) After the utility finishes it will report the firmware.bin file has beensuccessfully sent to the Media Vault, however the server will need additionaltime to install the firmware internally. The install process can take 15-20minutes. 7) The health LED will turn solid blue with the firmware installation process iscomplete.
These instructions will walk you through adding a printer to your HP MediaVault. It uses an example of a printer that hasdrivers included in Windows XP. However, some printers do not havedrivers that are included in Windows XP. For those you will either need to findthe printer's installation CD and tell the setup wizard know that you have the disk (HaveDisk) oryou'll have to download the drivers from the printer manufacturer's supportwebsite and install them on the PC. If you do that, pay attention to theinstallation procedure so you can locate the folder where the drivers wereinstalled. Then you will need to navigate to thelocation where the drivers are located, i.e., a subfolder on the CD drive, orthe folder where they were installed on the hard drive after downloading themfrom the Internet and running the installation procedure. It's the 'HaveDisk' menu selection that instructs the printer installation Wizard that youwill let it know where the drivers are located.
A new installation CD and PC Restore CD that fixes Vista incompatibilities and a few other bugs wasreleased on Feb 22, 2007. You can also order thephysical CDs for no charge from the same location on HP's website. To distinguish these disks from the originals, along with calling each ofhaving them 'Version 2' in the text area, HP changed the background colorsof the CDs from Blue (PC Restore CD) and Green (Install CD) to Black(Version 2 PC Restore CD) and Orange (Version 2 Install CD).
In this case, it would take the data partition of the mobile rack drive and mount it files into the folder FileShare/disk2. If it works, you can find the files in that folder. Copy the files off the Media Vault and on to the PC. After it completes, then you should reboot the Media Vault. Do not perform any other operations than a data recovery when a partition is mounted to FileShare. Then you can delete the corrupted volume and create a new one. 2ff7e9595c
